#HeatmapMonday – March 16, 2015

Running every day as part of a #runstreak presents a number of challenges, both physical and mental.  One of those challenges, as simple as it sounds, is keeping myself from getting bored out of my mind from running all of the same routes over and over again. Inspired by a conversation I had with fellow training addict Marvin Tabangay (who I come to find out is doing something similar in Santa Monica), I’m adding a bonus feature to the #runstreak:  Heatmap Monday. Strava has this amazing feature that creates a ‘heatmap’ of...

Ringing in my 40th at Wildflower

Ringing in my 40th at Wildflower

Its been 2 years since Wildflower last made me her bitch.  After being thoroughly dominated by this course several times, you’d think I would have learned my lesson by now.  But she’s a evil seductress, a temptress, The Red Priestess of the triathlon world.  She draws you in with her beauty and then chews you up and spits you out.  And you can’t stop coming back for more. Each time you claim that ‘this is the year I’m going to own this course’, and then mile 4 of the run happens. The trickery is so...

Back in Action

I’ve tried so hard to not let weeks go by without a blog post, but work finally got the best of me.  Back on the weekend of the 4th of July I got hired to compose for an ABC Family Christmas movie, and I’ve been underground ever since.  The turnaround was tight and I had to write music at a blistering pace throughout the entire month of July.  It was an intense but completely rewarding job, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.  I got to write some ass-kicking action music, very much along the lines of the type of...

Onto the Next – Coaching and Levi’s Gran Fondo

Things are looking up as we storm past my 39th birthday, the last birthday before I make the jump into an age group that I’m not quite ready to admit I’m a part of.  This past year has been one of ups and downs physically, with some spectacular things happening at the 70.3 and 140.6 distances that also translated into some pretty negative physical repercussions that I’m still dealing with to this day. As I ‘age’ up and begin to emerge from the confines of injury, I’ve spent quite a bit of time evaluating...

On The Outside Looking In and Dreams of Ultrarunning

Its only my first weekend on crutches, and I’m already jumping out of my skin.  I’m not going to lie, this weekend has been tough.  Not only has it been tough because I’m hopping around on two sticks that are chafing the crap out of my armpits and making everything a complete pain in the ass, but its been tough because so many of my former TNT Ironteam teammates are out there killing it at their respective training weekends and all I can do is watch.  It was a big weekend for the TNT LA Chapters, with Ironteam heading up...

And Just Like That, My Season Is Over

Posted by on Mar 18, 2013 in Foot Pain, Life, Open Water Swim, Racing, Stress Fracture, Swimming, Training, Triathlon | 6 comments

I really (like REALLY) wanted to write about the Wolfpack Hustle #MarathonCrash race today.  This past weekend was absolutely epic, with Sunday’s bike race along the abandoned streets of the LA Marathon course (in the middle of the night) being one of the funnest and most intense events I’ve ever participated in. But unfortunately, this week starts of with some soul crushing news for me on the injury front.  The race season that I had planned out for 2013 (which just started for me 2 weeks ago), is officially over.  My right...

Looking for swim workouts? Here’s a Masters swim treasure chest!

I’ve found a GREAT resource for people that are looking for swim workouts to do.  Swim Coach and professional triathlete Sara McLarty has a blog that she posts Masters swim workouts on, several times a week.  These workouts are typically divided up into 3 different skill/difficulty/speed levels, making them accessible to just about anyone looking to work on their swim. Her blog is a tremendous help for people like myself that aren’t currently working with a coach or team: Masters Swim Workouts By Sara Mclarty It also includes...

Training Update – Base 3, Week 2

Another week of training in the books.  I cannot believe how quickly they are flying by!  As I look back at the past week, I’m encouraged by the fact that I was able to clock my highest volume of training so far in 2013 at just a hair over 11 hours.  But as I look at the date, the reality is setting in that I’m only 3 weeks out from Ironman California 70.3, and I’m not even close to being where I need to be.  I just need to keep reminding myself that Oceanside is just a training weekend and nothing more, so I need to...

#missionpossible Challenge – Day 3

Day 3 of the #missionpossible challenge was all about creativity.  We were given the option to create our own workout from 3 different categories, and it didn’t disappoint.  I’ve never done burpees before…..I’ve seen them, have always said I would try them, but have always found a way to avoid them. Let me just say this…. that shit is hard!  My left knee doesn’t agree with them all that well, but I’d like to think that over time maybe that will change.  Denial?  Yes.  But I’m going to do...

Training Update – Base 3, Week 1

Posted by on Mar 7, 2013 in Alcatraz, Core, Cycling, Heart Rate Training, Masters Swimming, Racing, Running, Strength, Swimming, Training, Triathlon | 0 comments

I entered into the final base phase of my training after a nice and easy recovery week.  The only difference between this and previous base weeks?  There was a race on the schedule, Escape From Alcatraz.  I went into this week approaching it as a true ‘Base’ week and not a race week.  One of the big mistakes I made last year was treating all of the weeks before and after the early season events as ‘race/recovery’ weeks.  Why was this a mistake?  Because it essentially meant have 2 consecutive light training weeks...
