Paleo

In September of 2012, I was invited to join a 30 day Paleo Challenge.  I had previously heard of Paleo but had never considered it something for me as the thought of no cheese or grains in my life was something I couldn’t even fathom.  I generally followed a high protein/low carb way of eating, but those small but additional limitations were a deal breaker for me.  But fresh off an injury plagued Ironman, I knew that I had to shut my training down and the days of 5,000 calorie workouts were temporarily behind me.

I needed some structure to keep the off-season weight gain at bay, so I opted into the challenge.  What was a month, afterall?

Nearly half a year later, I’ve fully embraced the paleo lifestyle and have transformed the way that I eat completely.  My body feels absolutely amazing, as the inflammation and stomach bloating that used to plague my every day existence has all but disappeared.   I’ve made Paleo something that is not just a challenge, but a way of life, and I will share many of the experiences/tools/recipes that have made me a believer in being a ‘caveman’.

The #Vitamix Cleanse – Day 3

Day 3 of my Vitamix Cleanse has come and gone and I successfully made it thru 3 days of juice fasting.  I almost cracked last night……I went to my Vintage 1 class last night at UCLA (I’m getting my Wine Education and Management Certificate), and like we do every week we tasted 6 different wines.  Despite using spit cups, I’d be a liar if I said that there’s wasn’t any stray wine that made it into my belly.  Having not had wine or a any substantial food for the past several days, let me just say that the...

The #Vitamix Cleanse – Day 2

Day 2 of my Vitamix Cleanse has come and gone, and it was another successful day!  I was really curious to see how my body was going to respond on Day #2, as I figured it would be the time when it would finally ask, “Ok, what the F- is going on here?”.  But for the most part, I felt great!  And I was (surprisingly)  not hungry at any point during the day. I made a total of five Vitamix concoctions, the first of which I broke into 2 servings: Breakfast and 2nd Breakfast.  With the amount of water that I have to add to these...

The Vitamix Cleanse – Day 1

I just emerged from television pilot season with everything as it relates to health and fitness being turned upside-down on its head.  Working on call 24 hours/day, 7 days a week for most of the month of April always proves to be an enormous challenge when it comes to training and nutrition, and this pilot season certainly kept the tradition alive..  My paleo ways went from being a nearly full-time practice to more of a 60/40 mix of paleo/non-paleo and my swimming was reduced from 6 days/week down to 2-3.  But I survived and emerged on the...

The Road To Paleo – Part 1

Posted by on Apr 12, 2013 in Food, Life, Paleo | 0 comments

The state of my well being is completed dictated by the food I eat.  Its really that simple.  When I eat processed, sugary, and nutritionally deficient foods, I feel like complete dog shit.  There is such a direct correlation between my mood and what I eat that if you catch me with a case of the grumps and asked me what I had for breakfast, you’d know exactly why I was being such a pill as soon as I answered.  When I don’t eat ‘well’, my body physically aches and rebels.  And when my body aches, its puts me in a pissy mood.   It...

On The Outside Looking In and Dreams of Ultrarunning

Its only my first weekend on crutches, and I’m already jumping out of my skin.  I’m not going to lie, this weekend has been tough.  Not only has it been tough because I’m hopping around on two sticks that are chafing the crap out of my armpits and making everything a complete pain in the ass, but its been tough because so many of my former TNT Ironteam teammates are out there killing it at their respective training weekends and all I can do is watch.  It was a big weekend for the TNT LA Chapters, with Ironteam heading up...

New Goals and Race Schedule For 2013

With this latest setback with the foot that refuses to cooperate, I’v had to re-evaluate my goals and race plans for 2013. Ironman California 70.3 and Ironman Hawaii 70.3 are on the shelf.   I have to be off my foot for the next 2 months, which definitely eliminates any possibility of doing either of the races.  When I inquired about the WTC’s refund policy as it relates to injury, I was graciously told that there isn’t one. Ouch! While I really wanted to throw down at Hawaii this year, there’s always next year.  Its...

A Look Back, New Goals, and New Beginnings

Posted by on Jan 26, 2013 in Cycling, Ironman, Life, Marathon, Paleo, Racing, Swimming, Training | 0 comments

So much has happened since my last post, I almost don’t know where to begin.  I guess I’ll start by saying that 2013 finds me healthy, happy, and in a very good place.  I’m training again (in a much lighter capacity than the same time last year), have my goals set, and most importantly am feeling strong, fit, and healthy. It took a lot of work to get to this point however, with a lot of bumps along the way. Following my race at Oceanside in March, I settled into the build phases of my training for the Ironman US...
